ACCOMMODATION LIST

The upper map is intended to indicate the bus routes mentioned below (double-click above maps to enlarge them.)

(This accomodation list was revised revised 27 April 2008)

Though there are plenty of hotels, guest houses and B&Bs to be found in Brighton itself (see
www.tourism.brighton.gov.uk or http://hotels.brighton.co.uk/) there are not very many in or near Henfield, so immediate booking is recommended, especially if several families wish to book the same location.

Public transport to Henfield is also limited but there are bus services as follows:
- No 17 (every hour Mon-Sat, every two hours Sun). Brighton-Patcham-Woodmancote-Henfield –Partridge Green- Cowfold-Horsham. (Brighton-Henfield about 35 minutes)
- No 100 (every hour Mon-Sat). Burgess Hill-Hickstead-Albourne-Woodmancote-Henfield-Small Dole-Upper Beeding-Bramber-Steyning-Pulborough.
- No 100 (every two hours Sun, note slightly different route). Burgess Hill-Ditchling-Hassocks-Clayton-Pycombe-Henfield-Small Dole-Bramber-Steyning-Storrington.

A sign ^ is used below to show which places are thought to be served by a bus.
.
Those coming to the gathering by train might like to go to Horsham railway station and catch the No 17 bus, which leaves the station forecourt at 25 minutes past the hour from 0925 to 1625. Or go to Burgess Hill and catch the No 100 bus which has a stop not far from the station and leaves at 5 minutes past the hour from 0905 to 1805. They can ask their host to name the best stop at which to get off and how to get from there to the place at which they are staying. Alternatively they could arrange for a friend to meet them at Hassocks railway station, or take a taxi from there.
.
Those coming by air to Gatwick airport should take a train to one of the places in the previous paragraph. Though there are fast coaches from Heathrow and Gatwick to Brighton, those arriving at Heathrow are advised to take a coach to Gatwick and carry on as above from there.
.
There is a wonderful site at http://www.traveline.org.uk/ on which, for instance you can see the full details of the above trip from Heathrow to Henfield, taking about 3 hours.

We suggest you book three nights Thursday, Friday and Saturday 11, 12 & 13 September which would allow attendance at all the events. Thursday, though not essential, would be helpful for those wishing to make an unhurried start on Friday (especially those displaying family memorabilia and pedigrees). Sunday would be helpful for those joining the proposed coach trip for the Cheshire ‘leg’ of the Gathering which will leave Henfield fairly early on Monday morning – those going by car may prefer to book somewhere en route for Sunday night.

It may be necessary to make a deposit to reserve your rooms, but if you pay now most locations may permit cancellations with no penalty up to about a month in advance if you change your mind. Prices pppn assume two adults sharing a double room, minimum current price. Several places charge extra for Saturday. Some of the distances below are guesses.

For more details of almost all the accommodation, see http://www.smoothhound.co.uk/ or http://www.4hotels.co.uk/ Note that the post code has been given below in all cases. It is worth entering it in http://www.multimap.co.uk/ to discover the precise location, often in a surprising place.

As well as providing information on accommodation in the Burgess Hill area, www.burgesshill.gov.uk (01444 238202) can provide a bed booking service and answer all specific questions. One important factor is that they deal with inspected accommodation which gives a quality assurance.

Help please! Please inform Arthur at carden@one-name.org of anything you find out when attempting to book accommodation (such as the number of rooms available, which places are already full, precise location, errors and so on) so that this document can be amended accordingly. When you have made a booking, please tell us where, so that we can show that you have done so by adding ‘your’ number (taken from the ‘Expressions of Interest’ list elsewhere on this web site). For example, Judy Hearndon has booked one of the rooms at the Laurels at Henfield, so the number [11] appears in red. Comments also appear in red.

Note A. The Coach House at Cowfold has 13 rooms of which 8 are twin bedded. 9 are on the ground floor opening directly on to the yard, in the Stableblock. See photo at www.infotel.co.uk/25633.htm Prices currently £58 per room excluding breakfast, but may soon be increased. Breakfast not included, but available. No residents’ lounge, but pleasant areas in pub. Rooms OK but need refurbishing.

Note B. Travelodge Hickstead offers rooms at £61 which can each accommodate 3 people. Currently it is possible to book Thursdays and Sundays at £29 per room and Fridays at £39 – these “saver” rates apply up to July, but it is not known if they will still apply in September. Even cheaper rates are sometimes available a month or so in advance. Breakfast not included, but available from “Little Chef.” For more information try http://www.travelodge.co.uk/ There are two Travelodge sites in Brighton, one on the No 17 bus route above. They are rather more expensive than the Hickstead site.

Note C. This modern Youth Hostel has 15 rooms, all with bunk beds, 4 x 2 beds, 3 x 4, 6 x 6 (56 beds altogether). The rooms are small and primitive but clean, like cabins on a cross-channel steamer. Each room has a washbasin. Showers and WCs available nearby. £15 pppn. If two people take a 4 bed room, the unused beds will be charged at the child rate of £10. Duvet, pillow and laundered sheets provided (good idea to bring a pillowcase and perhaps an extra pillow). Excellent kitchen, lounge, dining area. Meals on request, or self-catering. The hostel is on the top of the South Downs with wonderful views, reached by a 3 mile single-track road from Shoreham. Though little over 5 miles from Henfield as the crow flies, the hostel is just over 10 miles by road, as access is only from the south! Very cheap and well worth consideration, especially for a large party.

Note D. Cottesmore Cottages. These superb lodges on a country house estate each sleep 4 and are fully equipped with kitchen, dishwasher etc. Changeover day Saturday, cost £600 per lodge (without health club or golf package) even if you only arrive Thursday, so this location is really only suitable for those who want a base for a full week.
